ASK AND YE SHALL RECEIVE
The timing of the beach trip was perfect. After counting the months, then down to the days, the
Since recently starting a prayer journal, I had been asking the Lord to give me opportunities...ones through which I could minister to others. The next morning, after a short walk of beachcombing, I had just settled down for a long awaited day on the beach, when I noticed a group of people gathering just a few feet from where I was sitting. One in particular caught my eye...the lady in a wheelchair.
As I watched the group slowly moving toward the water's edge, I immediately knew what was happening. This was a request from the woman in the wheelchair to her family...she wanted to see the ocean one more time. The family surrounded her, as if by being close they could not only protect her, but also not miss one moment of this extraordinary event. Perhaps it was because I had just experienced the loss of a long time friend the week before and emotions were easily stirred, but whatever it was, I saw the love in the faces of these strangers, the pure joy of sharing this brief time together.
I so wanted to get a picture of the woman, but it was difficult with everyone moving about. I already knew this was to be my next blog post and the story could not be told without a picture While the family was busy taking their photos, I tried not to be obvious...just another vacationer taking pictures of the beach. As I watched and waited for an opportunity, all of a sudden, there it was..a clear view of the woman and as I later learned, her sister. It was perfect...the two of them sitting quietly side by side, as if mesmerized by the awesome view of the ocean. They sat that way for a while, their family moving back, giving them these precious moments together.
I began to feel as if I was a partcipant in the scene playing out before me. I wanted to go and speak to someone, but didn't want to intrude. It was then that one of the grand daughters came to where I was sitting and asked if I would take a picture of the whole group. I was delighted! Why hadn't I thought of that? Everyone assembled together at the water's edge and several photos were taken. They were so appreciative, as was I for being given that opportunity.
I returned to my beach chair, thinking I would have to write the story from my perspective and with the little information I had gathered. One by one, they headed back to the house, all but two who were walking toward me. For whatever reason, they wanted to share what had been taking place. It was as I had thought, but was so grateful now that I knew for sure. I told them I wanted to tell their story in my blog. They were surprised but seemed to like the idea and asked if I would send them a copy. Had it been under different circumstances, I would like to have spent some time with them, but this was their family time, special moments that have already become treasured memories. What a gift this was! No monetary value, but priceless to all who shared in it.
I don't believe in chance or coincidence. Being a witness to this very personal display of a family's love was a Divine appointment. Of that I have no doubt. People come and go in our lives...some for a lifetime, some only briefly as this family did on that beautiful May morning, but what a blessing it was that I 'just happened' to be there.
We all returned home from the beach, but the memories live on...as does the salt air and the cry of the gulls. 'Precious memories, how they linger...'

EARLY SPRING GUEST...
February 23, 2018
The Lord speaks to us in ways we can understand. For me, it's usually in some form of nature. Awakening early this morning, I didn't know it yet, but a special treat awaited just outside the patio door.
As I passed the door on the way to my usual first stop, the coffee pot, my eye caught a flicker of movement just outside the door. For a few moments, the coffee pot was forgotten when I saw the tiny brown wren sitting on the wicker chair next to a planter of ivy. There was a dried leaf in her (or his) beak...not sure who's in charge of building the nest...but I'm thinking it's the dad's job after momma bird chooses the site.
I stood watching as his head jerkily moving side to side, but I knew without a doubt where he was headed with it. The planter was thick with ivy making a nice dry hideaway under the eave. About then, the mate, I'm assuming the momma, flew to the chair and perched herself close by as if making sure all was done correctly.
I wasn't surprised to see them, just surprised at the timing. It's way to early for spring! Another week until March. It has to be instinct...warmer temps, budding blooms...they must be thinking 'it's spring'. And so another season begins. I'm always amazed at how these little creatures know what to do...that it's time to prepare for a new family. God has given them the ability and the knowledge, while paying attention to every detail, as He does with all things. Seeing this same scene, yet different each year, reminds me of the song we sang in Sunday School years ago, "Who taught the birds to build their nest?"
By now, you must wonder where all this is going...this seemingly insignificant experience on my patio. Those who know me know I love my little feathered friends. My courtyard is a haven for them year round. There they have food, water, creeping vines to explore and quiet little spots to nest.
All this to say, God has created an indescribable world for us to live in. In the busyness of life, we hurry to the car, to the market, or wherever we need or are inclined to go, and we miss out on the little things. I think what I would've missed had the urge for coffee been greater than taking a peek outside and see my feathered friends busy at the their work, doing what they were created to do. I know all of you aren't bird lovers. Just sayin', take a little extra time to be kind, to hold a door, let the other guy get the first parking spot, or just say, "Hello" with a smile. You never know what might make someone's day just a little brighter.
Once again, the Lord spoke to me with a little serendipity to start my day with encouragement and hope. The one drawback to all this, Lucy and I have to be extra quiet for a few weeks when near the planter, but it's a small price to pay for the enjoyment it brings
"Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow or reap nor
gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.
Are you not of more value than they?"

TODAY IS ALL WE HAVE
February 11, 2018
Has it really been that long? My first post in at least three, maybe more, years? Do you ever get that nudging...that niggling in the back of your mind that you need to do something? Like my memoir...been in my mind for years now...knowing it needs to be written - for whatever reason - but it keeps getting replaced on the priority list. Same thing as my blog, same insecurity, same question, 'Who will read it?' Is that it? Is that why...the old 'fear' monster? Most likely. But, I've been working on that...the fear of fear. It can be so damaging, dragging you down like a ton of bricks...telling you all the negatives...discouraging and bemoaning your efforts.
Today, I ignore the fear... God did not give us a spirit of fear and knowing that, I will not receive it! So, a new season of 'Blest To Be' begins and to any and all who read it, you have my heartfelt thanks and appreciation.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
It all started a week ago. Much has changed since then, including the topic I was thinking about for my first blog. We make our plans, keep our calendar up to date, but sometimes Life happens in the midst of an ordinary day...it throws you a curve ball out of the blue, and we realize today really IS all we have.
I had no plans for the day. When my phone rang I was in my pajamas, on my second, maybe third, cup of coffee reading my devotionals and waiting for the caffeine to kick in. The caller, who is a dear friend, asked if I could take her to the hospital. This was the last thing I expected to hear. All sorts of things running through my mind, the first being what was wrong? The second, did I have time to get dressed, to take Lucy out? Yes, but no time to waste.
Amazing how my eighty something year old body can still switch gears when it has to! This wasn't in either of our plans for the day...an interruption that happens to millions of people on any given day. A curve ball. You have no option but to get in motion, catch it and start running. The mind as well as the body switches gears...what I had thought was important up until that moment, no longer was.
Hospitals are no fun, patient or visitor. But they are so appreciated in times of need. My friend who had several issues going on had to stay the night but she was treated, released and thankfully is back at home. Home never looks so good until you've been in the hospital.
Another curve ball later in the week...my 'granddaughter-in-law' expecting a baby in a few days was rushed to the hospital with appendicitis. Her plans hadn't included this. Life happening, again. Step by step, in order of priority, she and baby had the care they needed and as of today, both are at home and doing fine.

And so, in spite of stretched-to-the limit conditions, less than perfect situations, the human spirit overcomes and moves ahead with new found strength and faith that God is watching, ever faithful, and all knowing. One of my favorite quotes, not sure whose...maybe mine...is 'Our greatest lessons are learned through our most difficult trials.'
Time is the most valuable gift we can give or receive. Perhaps we could consider giving a little more of ourselves...be more accepting, more tolerant, more considerate of others and by doing so, make the world a better place for all.
Till next time....

DO I HAVE TO DO IT ALL?
Why does Christmas come earlier every year? Is it because I'm moving a bit slower and it takes more time to get things done? Makes sense. In any case, it'll be here in a couple of weeks and my lists are getting longer rather than shorter.
During Thanksgiving, with Christmas only four weeks away, I decided not to host my annual open house - was overwhelming myself with all that that entails. Relieved that I would be ahead of the game, so to speak, there was still the family Christmas gathering to plan. No big deal I thought, nothing like the all day event, people coming and going, never sure if there would be enough food - besides, the idea of just family eliminates some of the stress of trying to have everything perfect. In other words, I can cut a few corners, use the smaller tree and replace the centerpiece punch bowl with Coke and Sprite right out of the bottles. My family will understand - we know each other well after all this time, and after all, Mom isn't as young as she used to be (this going unspoken of course).
Since this was going to be more of a causal and relaxed get together, I decided to cut a few corners on the decorating as well. Do I have to put out every piece of holly, bunch of berries, every ornament collected over the span of a lifetime, every Santa or anything else glittery or Christmasy? No, I thought, I'll just do a little this year, make it easy on myself. But it really wasn't any easier since I had to go thru all the storage boxes in order to see what I wanted to use. Sorting thru all this was no easy task - I began to wonder if this was such a good idea after all. I started on the mantle first and saw it gradually coming to life with 'just a little' Holly and berries, my angel grouping, a candle and a couple of my favorite Santas. As I started to close the box marked 'mantle', I couldn't do it. I've come this far, sad to leave all the less favored things stored away and not be a part of the festivities. And so, out they all came, once again taking their rightful place on the mantle.
Reminded me of how we sometimes 'cut down' on other things - the time spent with family and friends - neglecting to see the needs of others - maybe look away as we pass the Salvation Army bell ringer. If we are to call ourselves Christians, we must be willing to do more than just a little. God expects more than that, more than whatever is left over - time or money.
I will think on this as I enjoy my mantle this Christmas season and as I make my resolutions for the New Year. In fact, I need to check out the pantry snd see if I have the makings for another pound cake - want to be sure to have enough, even tho it is 'just family.'
Peace on earth, good will toward men. 🎆.

SERENDIPITIES
SERENDIPITIES
When my son gave me a hanging basket of geraniums for Mother's Day, I had the perfect spot for it outside the dining room windows. It has done well in its new home and as I do every couple of days, I was pulling some brown leaves off at the bottom and seeing if it needed watering, when I was grazed by a flying object coming out of the basket. Startled wasn't the word for it. It took a moment to process what had just happened, then realized that I had some new 'nesters' — and this time, while mama was away, I peeked in and there they were, three tiny oval eggs lying gently on the perfectly rounded little nest. They looked so fragile, almost unreal, as if a mere touch might break them. How long had they been there? How long had mama bird been working on this perfect little nest? It mustn't take too long — I am outside a great deal of the time now and I never saw a sign.
Again, I stand amazed — how this tiny creature first dug down into the soil, then gathered and arranged each little piece, making sure it was just right. There is so much I don't know about my tiny feathered friends with whom I co-exist in the spring and summer, but thats okay. I guess all I need to know is put out the food, make them feel welcome and they will come. The only downside is that Maggie and I have to tiptoe around, pick and choose our time outside, so as not to disturb our avian visitor. That's okay too - they aren't here for long, only until the little ones are strong and can begin to test their wings. I am blessed to be a part of this mystery of life - nature is a wondrous thing if we just take time to see it.
Some may think this an insignificant, trivial thing to spend time talking about, but I see this as one of those special times God sends our way — a serendipity to lift our spirits and let us know He is paying attention. God knows what we enjoy and in turn enjoys blessing us with these little miracles. In the midst of all the chaos and turmoil that is a constant in today's world, sometimes just the awareness that God resides everywhere, even in my little backyard bird sanctuary, is a miracle in itself........
Be blest and be encouraged.

UPDATE ON BIRD HOUSE
Thought this little story would be appropriate today, after a week of incomprehensible hurt and sadness suffered by so many.......
This photo made just a couple of hours ago of mama bird feeding her new babies.
My last post was about a month ago telling about my little avian visitor preparing her nest, and today as I went out to enjoy the cool, sunny afternoon, once again there came the loud chirp that I at once recognized.
Looking toward the trellis where the little house hangs, I saw her - something dangling from her beak - couldn't tell what it was, but in a moment as she flew into the house, I knew at once when I heard those screechy little chirps, it was feeding time - they had arrived.
When mama bird left, out scouting for more food most likely, I quietly tiptoed over to the house. As I attempted to peek inside, I was amazed at how dark it was in there! Oh, how I wanted just a glimpse of these little ones - even thought about getting my flashlight, but decided against it. This was their home and I had no business intruding - besides, I didn't know what a bright light might do to them, to the natural order of things. And so, I went inside to get my camera, found a good spot far enough away, zoomed in and waited. In perhaps two or three minutes she was back and I got the photo.
Where do they find their food I wondered? How do they know what their babies like? Does she sleep with them at nite - I assume so. So many questions......... and then a song came to mind, one I used to sing with the primary children when I helped out in their Sunday School class many years ago - I believe the title was "Who taught the bird to build its nest" - or something similar. Strange, I should remember that - something so insignificant at the time, but then - it must be 45 years, it's so clear in my mind.
And of course, we know how mama bird can do all these things to take care of her young - that's how God created her, along with all the other creatures on earth - born with instincts - of survival and the need for continuity of their species. Amazing, I think, just amazing!
I don't know how long they will stay in their little dwelling, but how exciting if the Lord would let me 'just happen' to look out one day and see one of them perched on the edge, ready to try their wings. That would be awesome!
Be Blest and be encouraged ......... God Bless the USA!!

THE BIRD HOUSE
Today was one of those days I can't stay inside. I told myself I needed to write - but I answered, 'not while I have a chance to sit outside and catch a few rays - I can write when the sun goes down.' So along with Maggie, who also enjoys basking in the sun, and I went out into our little backyard retreat. It may be small, but the birds love sharing it with us. They have all they need - food, housing, jasmine vines and a climbing rose bush from which they can oversee all that's going on in their little domain.
It's been amazing these past few days the songs coming from these little creatures. I imagine it as their rehearsal, preparing their voices that have recently awakened to announce the long awaited arrival of Spring next week.
Maggie was dozing under the rose bush from which the bird house hangs - and as I sat quietly meditating and pondering the gift of this day, I was startled by a loud, almost irritated chirp close by. At first, I couldn't see where it was coming from - but then in a few moments, I spotted her sitting in the rose bush a short distance from the bird house and couldn't believe all that noise was coming from such a tiny bird! On looking closer, I saw that she had some small twigs in her mouth - how she was able to hold onto them and yell so loudly I have no idea, but it was then I realized we were keeping her from her appointed task - building her nest.
It was not easy waking Maggie from her comfy afternoon siesta, but after getting her inside, I stood at the door and watched - sure enough the tiny bird wasted no time going about her duties as a mom - preparing a home for her babies who will be arriving soon. What an unexpected gift on this quiet, ordinary day - a blessing of the smallest kind - but aren't those the ones that make life so special! God pays attention to the details in our lives as He does to His smallest creations - 'His eye is on the sparrow....'
I believe this is one way God speaks to us, and in order to hear Him, we must be aware - be still and know.... it's the little things that add up to make the extraordinary times in our lives. I am reminded of something I read recently - we do not remember days, we remember moments.
So, be aware when you're outside enjoying these early Spring days - listen and watch for the sights and sounds of the earth coming to life in this season of renewal and rebirth. The wellspring of life lies in our heart - that is where, if we but listen, we can hear the voice of God.
"There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens... Eccl: 3:1

GRATITUDE
November 8,'12
This being one of the coldest mornings so far this year, I turned on the gas logs, poured my coffee and while waiting for my waffles to heat in the toaster oven, turned on the tv to get the weather forecast. A typical start to the day - but not to those in the northeast who, while trying to recover from the worst hurricane ever in that area, were hit again with a n'oreaster bringing more wind, rain and snow. Those who had power restored, which were very few so far, lost it again after just enough time to heat the cold walls and beds, which I'm sure was appreciated if only briefly.

The scene was one of destruction, despair and the death toll is still uncertain. A reporter was interviewing a woman who had been displaced by the storm. 'This was my home,' she said tearfully. 'I've lived here 30 years and I have nothing left. I have nowhere to go and no idea what I'm going to do.' The clothes she was wearing were given to her at one of the donation centers. I cried with her, trying to imagine what I would do in her place - how does one start over? Where does one begin?
The importance of my weather forecast immediately went way down the list of priorities. Rising on my list at the moment was how can I help? If I could share my hot coffee, warm waffles, clean water and heat, of course I would in a heartbeat. This obviously is not physically possible, but I can give, if only in a small way - perhaps enough to supply water, blankets and/or food for a few - possibly a bag of dog or cat food for those whose animals are suffering and hungry. And I can pray.........
I looked at Maggie lying close to my feet contentedly chewing on her morning treat. I began to notice, in a deeper and more appreciative way, my surroundings - one by one things took on new meaning. The glow of the gas logs - the aroma from the kitchen - a sense of comfort and well-being came over me as would a warm blanket. Things normally taken for granted - the gas and electric coming on with the flick of a switch, the coffee pot beginning to brew when turned on, hot water streaming from the shower head - things that provide one's needs are not usually something we think about in the course of everyday life - unless they aren't there when we need them.
The Lord has blessed my family and me abundantly through the years - sometimes with far more than we needed or deserved - but never was there not enough. As I pray, not only for those who are victims of the storms, but all who are suffering from job loss, broken homes and all the ills of our society today, I pray also for those of us who have been blessed with enough and spared from the storms - that we may greet each day with an attitude of gratitude and always be mindful of the needs of others - 'there, but for the Grace of God, go I...'

WELCOME SPRING!
Greetings....
Spring is upon us once again - the only difference, it started about 3 weeks early! I, for one, am glad in a way - the pesky yellow pine pollen is gone that much sooner. Amazing, but due to the mild winter, I have trailing verbena that survived and is covered with deep purple blooms. For some reason, I have developed a love of lavender and purple. Maybe something to do with the book, 'When I am Old I will Wear Purple.' Have been meaning to read that, but haven't as yet gotten around to it.
Dates have a real significance for me; maybe I should clarify - I'm talking the calendar kind, not the other - of which it's been a long, long time for me:)) Which, by the way, is okay - I have left that up to God and am happy with whatever He decides. But that's another story for another time. As I was saying, about dates ... we all know how important birthdays are, as well as anniversaries of one sort or another. A memorable date is coming up for me tomorrow - March 31. On this date, 21 years ago, it was not a happy occasion, not an event marked by a photo album on my shelf of special memories. Instead, it was a life-changing experience I call ''the crossroads" - the time when my life as I knew it, changed forever.
We rarely know the meaning, blessing or consequence of an event until much later - until we've gained perspective through the years and begin to understand that the pain and comfort, joy and sadness that occurs in our lives is important - and necessary. Looking back at this dark time in my life, I see how God used it to bring me into the light of today. Each step, each turn in the road, even each detour was in His Plan.
Tomorrow will be a day of reflection and of gratitude. I will go back briefly to that time of depression and confusion, but only to measure how far I have come. Was that really me back then? Yes, it was me, but not the 'real' me. I wore the mask of pretense, which, if worn long enough, will eventually suffocate and stifle the true person within. Today, my 'true' person has emerged thanks to the grace of God. Without His love and faithfulness, as well as that of so many others He's brought into my life, I can't imagine where I would be. What a journey it has been!

VALENTINE'S DAY & OTHER THOUGHTS
This should be about Valentine's Day since it's coming up next week, but as oft happens, I'm not sure what it will be about until the words come onto the page.
Has been a while since my last blog - excuses, reasons? There are many that come to mind - and by the way, what is the difference in an excuse and a reason? I must check that out so as to be sure I'm using the right one in any given situation.
My last blog was in December and talked about putting away the Christmas decorations. How long ago that seems now - so much has happened in that relatively short span of time. The New Year has come and gone - the January bills have come in - we vow to do better next year, cut down a bit on gifts - after all, how much does anyone really need? If it comes down to someone 'really' being in need, we will be there, won't we?
Now, into February, the Super Bowl has been decided, Valentine's Day is upon us and all in between is life happening. And as I mentioned earlier, a lot has happened so far in this new year of 2012. You can all breathe easier knowing I'm not going to bore you with all the details - maybe just point out a couple of things that have been meaningful - not drastic or life-changing (although sometimes the simplest, most insignificant things have been known to change a life).
On New Year's Day, I started back to Mt Paran church - had been probably 16 or 17 years since I had last attended there. One of my goals for the year was to find a church home, and with that in mind, I had a mental list of a few churches to visit - but without any hesitation or doubt, upon entering the sanctuary of MPN, I knew - this was where I was supposed to be. I arrived early and after taking my place in the pew, the voices of the praise team were 'warming up' for the worship service soon to begin, and the sounds surrounded me as if to say 'welcome home.' Such a sense of peace and belonging were felt as I sat alone listening and just taking in the moment. Tears filled my eyes and I silently said a prayer of thanks for bringing me to this place. Needless to say, there would be no church-shopping after this - sometimes you just know - and that Sunday, I knew - this was it.
Secondly, in the 'meaningful' column of events this year, is our Writer's Group held once a month in Jasper. What a blessing it has been! Each month I learn something new, about a member of the group - about writing, the phrasing and use of words to express one's self - and sometimes I learn something new about myself. It's a 2-hour session we look forward to each month - a time and place of sharing, learning, making new friends, laughing and sometimes - healing. Again, it's God that brought these special people together - to what end we don't know yet, but whatever the purpose, it will be revealed in His time - and it will be good.
Not all that's happened has been happy and positive, not by a long shot - if that were the case, we would all be living a fairy-tale existence. But, in my humble opinion, life as we know it is normally a good balance - we can't get to the mountaintop without walking the valley, and isn't the challenge of the climb what makes it all worthwhile? Standing like Rocky Balboa at the top of those steps - with arms raised to the sky and shouting, "Thank you, Lord - I made it!" Can't you hear that music now??
(I had better add, just in case someone may question if Rocky had spoken those words, but I think we all know he didn't - guess I just thought it would've been great if he had.)
Among other things that go in the 'meaningful' column, a reconnection in one area of the family - some fun times with friends - new writing opportunities have arisen - a new chorale season has begun - and who knows what's next? One thing for sure, I'll be hanging around to see......... and I know it'll be good :)
May God Bless you and yours .......
Oh, and by the way, Happy Valentine's Day :))

UNWRAPPING THE BLESSINGS….
It’s all over… the tree is being replaced by the easy chair that usually sits by the fireplace. The gifts have been distributed, either to be used, worn or in many cases, returned to the places of purchase. Leftovers are warmed over – crumbs of the last piece of coconut cake and pecan pie are scraped clean so that the special Christmas dishes can be stored away for another year.
How dear to our hearts are these memories that are relived from year to year – growing sweeter as does wine with age. With each year that passes, inevitable change is necessary – life in general creates change. One thing, however, that never changes is the ‘reason for the season’ – the birth of the one and only Son of God, Jesus Christ.
Christmas is not just any celebration – not just another holiday – another reason to light candles and sing - it’s the original gift that keeps on giving 24/7. Just because the visible signs of the season are put away and our lives are, for the most part, back to normal – it isn’t over, far from it! When Jesus comes into your heart and becomes, not only Lord and Savior, but your best friend, He becomes a way of life – a belief that each new day is a blessing – a gift to be unwrapped and enjoyed as on Christmas morn.
How special we are – how much we are loved! There are no special requirements – no tests – no expiration date. All we have to do is to accept, and by faith, believe, in order to receive His gift of Life and Love.
As the New Year approaches, my thoughts turn to resolving issues, doing better, being better – promises to begin a new and improved year – the best ever! Only time will tell – God has the year already planned, and the year after and the year after that. All I can do is stay close to Him and be thankful as I unwrap the Blessed Gift of each new day.

My Window to the World
The size of one’s window doesn’t necessarily define what one sees. The limitations of my vision are oft times due to self-inflicted boundaries.
My eyes, transfixed on the sky as it changed from moment to moment, followed this display of the most amazing colors until the sun rose to its fullness above the trees. To witness the awesome beauty of a morning sunrise, one doesn’t require a grand floor-to-ceiling window overlooking a panoramic horizon – God’s colors shine equally as well through the smallest of dormers in the most modest abode.
What we see comes from a place deep inside –
For so many years the window to my world was seen through eyes that were clouded to the beauty that lay beyond my windowpanes. Even God’s colors couldn’t penetrate the shield that covered not only my eyes, but also my heart and perhaps to the depths of my soul. That place deep inside was not discovered until the Lord began healing me from within – beginning so far down in my inner being that for a long time I didn’t recognize the changes that were taking place.
The Lord works that way, increasing awareness of the smallest, most insignificant things we sometimes take for granted, or worse yet, rarely even notice. They become more important, more interesting – until one morning for no apparent reason, the colors in the sunrise take my breath away. I watch in awe wondering, are all sunrises this beautiful or is today special? And I hear as if in answer to my silent question - Yes, they are all beautiful, just as every day is special as well as every blessing I bestow upon you – I had looked, but had not seen – not until the Lord persistently made His way into that deep inner place within the soul where, when reached, one’s entire being is transformed.
The windows of my world have changed over the years – the vistas to which they open have changed, but no matter, whether city streets, mountains or the shore, I see with greater appreciation the creation that lies outside my window – nature’s continuous evolvement from season into season, each with it’s own uniqueness and wonder. From my window that looks eastward toward the sunrise, with all boundaries removed, physically and spiritually, I see the ebb and flow of life.
Be Blest and be Encouraged,

September 11
Two days before the tenth anniversary of that fateful day in our country, September 11, 2001, memories flood back as the media begins its coverage. Many tragic events have taken place over the years, but for me 9/11 is one of the most heartbreaking.
Over the past decade, I have watched the event being played and replayed, and it is no less horrific now, nor do I believe the impact will lessen, no matter how many more anniversaries of this date are observed. I have heard some say they shouldn’t make such a ‘big deal’ every year – it’s over and done, we need to move on – I strongly disagree. Although it is especially difficult for the families of the victims, I believe it’s necessary, not only to remember those who were lost and the tireless efforts of the first responders, but also to recognize and be aware of the vulnerability of anyone at any given time. Who would have thought that such a thing could happen in our country?
On my first visit to New York in ’04 with my granddaughter, Kate, out of so many venues and events we planned to see, the one ‘must-see’ was ground zero. What a moment it was to actually be there and see it in person. I was amazed that it was such an emotional experience – it looked like pictures you see in war movies – total devastation – indescribable! And then there was the little church across the street from ground zero, St Paul’s Episcopal Chapel, circa mid 1700’s, which turned out to be the highlight of our trip, at least for me.
It was a beautiful old stone building with an arched doorway and small cemetery in the front surrounded by an iron fence. After seeing the small historical sign that said George Washington had worshipped there, I knew I had to see inside. The moment we opened the heavy wooden door, I was overwhelmed – hundreds, maybe thousands of pictures, mementos, fireman and police badges and hats, handmade quilts from all over the country covered tables and walls. Thankfully, there were also boxes of Kleenex scattered about… there wasn’t a dry eye to be seen.
Three years had passed by the time we visited the little chapel and there had been countless people who had come through – in the beginning, it served as a refuge for families, workers, visitors, for rest, food, prayer, whatever the need, its doors were always open. And now it had been turned into a memorial, a sanctuary for the memory of lost loved ones. That was a special day for Kate and me – the memory of it remains in my mind and heart and is always more vivid at this time each year.
I feel a connection and an obligation to these people, those who were taken and those who remain. We were all created by the same God, each of us a small part of the whole. On Sunday, the tenth anniversary of this fateful event, I will as always have my Kleenex handy as I watch the ceremonies at the new World Trade Center site. Time has not lessened the sadness of it all, but time does remind us how thankful we should be to live in this awesome country.Thank you for letting me share my thoughts with you - I welcome yours. May God continue to bless our nation, and may God bless us - every one.

Transfomed
Scripture says we are transformed by the renewal of our minds. Over and over that has been proven to me. But I have learned recently during my last and final (written in stone) move, that we are also transformed by renewing ourselves in all areas - this may not make much sense as I'm still in transformation from 'more to less.' So, while in the process of pruning away and getting down to the basics - have quickly realized 'out of sight, out of mind.' What I once thought was absolutely necessary for a happy, fulfilled life, is no longer required, or, in just ten short days, is no longer missed.
It must be the season of life in which I find myself right now. The autumn years, they used to be called. Life needs to be simpler, easier to manage and most of all, lived to the full. My time is shorter, which makes it much more valuable. My priorities seem to change from day to day ....... fitting in each 24 hour period that which I feel is most important, and in days to come, more enjoyable.
A renewed spirit and outlook has accompanied my move. A sense of freedom I have not experienced until now - unburdened by many of life's accumulations, I am reminded of the verse in Isaiah:
"Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall, but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles, they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint." Chapter 40:30-31
My writing has been on the back burner the last few weeks, but I felt the need to 'connect' and to express just a small part of what has transpired these few weeks. This was definitely a move on the part of the Lord - with everything happening in six days - with the market and economy in the state it's in - it's gotta be God! Things are still in disarray, to say the least, but even my perfectionism seems to be transformed - surprisingly, I have been in no rush to 'get it all done asap.' As I sit among books and pictures stacked with no place to go yet, clothes piled in corners awaiting their place in their new closet, I am secure in the knowledge that all will get done, and at my own pace. That is indeed, for me, a major transformation!!
Many thanks to my family and friends who have offered their help and support - I am truly blessed.
Until next time, be blessed and be encouraged......

FREEDOM
The first amendment of the Bill of Rights states:
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”
We have many freedoms in this country, many of which are taken for granted. The most important, at least to me, is freedom of religion and freedom of speech. Just imagine if we were bussed to a place of worship, one that was dictated by the government – or, when writing our blogs, emails, letters, books or educational materials, they would have to be censored. I don’t know about you, but I cannot even comprehend having to live under these conditions, as many people do.
When I sit down to write my blog, or my notes which one day will be miraculously transformed into my memoir :>) , many times I have no clue what I’m going to say after the subject line is written. I had planned to write about ‘how we know when it’s God’ which I will at some point, mainly because with all that’s happened in the last 2 or 3 weeks regarding my move, there is no doubt that He has been in control. But, as I said, that’s for another day.
Freedom comes in many forms, and most likely we all have our own appreciation and definition of the various freedoms we enjoy. There is always that chance that one or more of our freedoms can be taken away, especially as we get older – older I said, not old – there is a difference, you know. As I write, I am answering my own question as to why this subject? I see the words and realize that this is a subject closely related to my present circumstances – not that any of my freedom is being taken away, but that a new season in my life is beginning – decisions are being made regarding what is really important, how much is enough and how will I spend my remaining years.
Living in America, freedom, for the most part, is a choice. We can be free physically, but at the same time, we can limit our freedom by the burdens and baggage we choose to carry – whether real or imagined. I think of my Mother, gone now for 14 years – she lived alone and had the freedom to do whatever she chose after retiring – but although she had this gift of freedom to learn, travel, volunteer – whatever – she chose to do none of these. She became an agoraphobic in her last few years – fear of the outside world robbed her of her freedom and quality of life. It saddens me that so many, whether due to their choices or their circumstances, are not free but are limited because of health, finances or that old enemy, Fear.
I thank God every day for my country - for the freedom it offers – for health and being of sound mind – I know, some of you are frowning and shaking your head at this remark – but most of the time it works okay. The Lord has blessed me far beyond anything I would have dreamed – my family and friends who make life’s journey worthwhile and interesting, not to mention Maggie, my dear little four-legged companion who brings so much joy. And now as a new season begins, I look forward with anticipation to whatever is in store – to embrace and explore the gift of freedom that opens the door to unlimited opportunities and possibilities.
God Bless you and yours.

Friendship
What a blessing - the gift of friendship.
The Lord knew we would need someone to lean on, someone with whom we could share, not only our sorrows and disappointments, but our joys and achievements as well. One may have numerous acquaintances during their lifetime, but true friends are counted among life's greatest blessings.
From the beginning, the Lord knew our needs. He knew there would be the darkness of the valleys - those times when a kind word can be so reassuring and a strong hand taking hold of ours to steady our walk. Most of all, He knew we would need those who would accept us as we are, giving us companionship and love unconditionally with nothing expected in return. These, I believe, are the qualifications of a friend.
The Lord brings people into our lives for different reasons and different seasons. Some are with us for just a season, while others remain, steadfast and true. During my lifetime countless people have walked with me, encouraged and endured the trials and tribulations - many were not destined to remain and have gone their own way - but those that the Lord chose for my long term friends have been and are among my life's greatest blessings. Those are the ones who accompanied me through the darkest times, as well as those who shared the awesome view from the mountaintop.
Time spent there is like no other - a place to be refreshed, renewed and restored.
Thank you, Lord, for friends - for these special blessings in my life.

Not Father, but Daddy
As with all special occasions and holidays, they come around every year. Father's Day is no exception. God called Daddy home forty-six years ago. He was only forty-nine and had finally stopped drinking, remarried and was happy, probably for the first time in his life. After so many years of turmoil and unhappiness, I ask again, Why, God?
I didn't know Daddy very well. I won't bore you with all the details, but briefly, Mother and Daddy divorced when I was seven - the typical dysfunctional scenario - young parents who didn't have a clue, throw in alcohol, very little money, struggles within the family members to stay afloat and stay together, and there you have it. As I look back, we didn't have a lot going for us - that's not an excuse, it just was what it was at the time.
After the divorce, Daddy and I were, you might say, estranged. Oddly enough, I didn't think much about it then - my life was moving along, ordinary but okay. I was married at eighteen in my sister-in-law's home - I don't remember either Mother or Daddy being there. Later, the children came along, and from time to time we would visit Daddy and his wife. As well as I remember, it was always an obligatory thing - not a 'real' family gathering - I guess it was because we were never a 'real' family.
After he quit drinking, Daddy was a different person, but perhaps by then, we had grown too far apart, too distant in our own everyday lives. Had I realized, of course, that our time was limited, I would have made more effort - but isn't that always the way? As they say, you never miss something until it's gone - and my Daddy was gone way too soon - before I could say, "I love you, Daddy - I'm sorry we weren't closer, but we'll do better from now on."
Daddy died in a tragic car accident - taking someone else's place at work one day. Why that day? Why couldn't it have been the next day? If this doesn't confirm the adage 'being in the wrong place at the wrong time' - or maybe not. My beliefs have changed over the years and today I know in my heart, it was his time - I don't know why, but I know God was ready for him to come home. He gave Daddy that opportunity to change his life and to come to know Him - if not for that, I would have some serious doubts, but thankfully, I am comforted knowing he's with the Lord and hopefully can look down on me and my family and look forward to the day when he can meet his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and we'll finally be a 'real' family.
So, here's to you, Daddy - I hope you can hear me when I say I love you and miss you. Sorry we didn't spend more time together, but one day we'll have all of eternity to catch up.
Happy Daddy's Day

AFTER THE STORM
As most of you know by now, mornings on my porch are my favorite time of day. A place to meditate, contemplate and mentally and spiritually restore, reflect and renew.
I marvel at the tranquility and sense of normalcy after the intense storm last night. I have seen storms in my life, but this was different, not just in intensity, but the overall experience. The power went out shortly after sunset - the darkening night sky began its transformation into an awesome display of nature's fury totally unleashed! What made this storm so unusual was this cloud in the distance, clearly defined and set apart with a display of continuous lightening so bright I would have to look away. That's not so unusual you might say - but what was unique to this particular cloud was its color - it was red. It looked as though the area below was in flames and the lightening was reflecting this in the night sky - like something you see in one of these 'end of times' movies - honestly, that's what it looked like - a special effects scene staged to frighten its audience with 'shock and awe.'
Usually, summer storms blow over quickly, but not this one. Although the wind was fierce, this storm wasn't affected - it kept its steadfast position until all its energy was used up.
In the midst of it all, my grandson, Tony, who always comes up with his own particular style of humor, says "I think it's the rapture." But, since we're still here this morning, that was not the case.
A new day has dawned, God's in His Heaven and all's right with the world. We are back in the morning routine that pervades my little back yard world - birds busy with the things birds do, cows contentedly grazing ( I did worry just a little about them, although I am much better about that), flowers are bright and refreshed after the much-needed rain and the air is a bit cooler. This is life - this is how it's supposed to be. If we didn't have the storms, we wouldn't appreciate the moments of quiet inner and outer peace that surround us - such as this, another ordinary morning after an extraordinary experience of God's amazing Power and Love.

Actions - not Words
As much as I love words and love to write, that scripture keeps coming back to me: "Be ye doers of the Word, and not hearers only." Words are empty without action - a false commentary with no meaning, no committment - the easy way out.
Being less fortunate doesn't mean, less money, less material things - it means 'less anything that keeps a person stifled in their suffering and feeling of inadequacy. "Do I count? Do I matter? Why am I taking up space on this earth?" If any of us have these questions, we could be one of the less fortunate. One definition of 'fortunate' is: receiving good from unexpected or uncertain sources.
I am the first to admit, I don't understand how this works - knowing God doesn't play favorites, how can it be that so many are so unfortunate? Some say we create our own problems and misery - to an extent, I believe it. Others say, we make our own luck, yet others say there is no such thing as luck. These are more things I do not understand - we all have our own personal experiences and beliefs.
The one truth I am sure of is that the Lord didn't put us on this earth to be hurtful to one another, to ignore those in need, whether a friend, family or complete stranger. I often look back at missed opportunities when 'I was too busy, or it wasn't a convenient time' - it saddens my heart that I have these memories, these missed chances to show God's Love - and I know it saddens Him as well.
My job is not to analyze why and wherefore - my job, in my opinion, is to recognize and be proactive - not ignore a situation because it doesn't fit my schedule. It takes more than words to mend a broken heart, to lighten someone's load, to share a grief or loss - it is the direct and personal touch of a hand or comfort of a shoulder, or perhaps just the presence of a fellow human being, listening and walking with you side by side, saying "I am here to help - take my hand lean on me."
Do we see and hear ourselves as others do? I think not. We all come from our own place, where we are, and we think what that place is is important - and well it may be - important to that person, but not necessarily to anyone else. As they say, 'you have to be there - you have to walk in another's shoes.' Not always possible physically, but if we learn anything from God's teaching, it should be compassion and sensitivity to those less fortunate.
